#53 The One Question That Unlocks Purpose for Teenagers
The Key to Discovering What They Are Made For
When I first picked up the bestselling book The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren, I was totally stumped by the first four words:
“It’s not about you.”
This hard-hitting statement reminded a generation that true purpose isn’t found in self-fulfilment—it’s found in aligning with God’s greater plan.
And yet, today, this idea still flies in the face of everything culture tells teenagers, as they search for purpose everywhere.
Culture says it is all about them!
Some chase it through their studies, believing that better grades, a top university, and a high-flying career will help them find their purpose. Others look for meaning in relationships—romantic love, family, friendships—hoping that connection will fill the void.
Many turn inward, diving into self-discovery, taking endless personality tests, and trying to figure out who they really are and why they matter. (FYI, I’m always Bella in the Disney Princess test.)
I’ve known teens who look outward, building influence through social media, curating their personal brand, and seeking validation in likes and follows. Mr BEAST is their life goal!
For some, purpose is found in experiences—travel, adventure, ticking off bucket lists—believing the next exciting destination will finally bring fulfilment.
None of these pursuits really answer the deeper question: Why am I here?
That’s not a new question though. People have been asking it for thousands of years. In fact, a man once asked Jesus directly: “What’s the most important thing?” in a bid to find out what he was supposed to do with his life.
Jesus didn’t hesitate. He handed over the key to unlocking your purpose in Christ:
“Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind. And love your neighbour as yourself.”
That’s it. No long explanation. No complicated formula. Just love God, love others.
Jesus made it simple. Purpose isn’t something you achieve—it’s something you receive. When you love God first, everything else finds its place. When you love others, your life has meaning beyond yourself.
The key to finding your purpose is realising that God had a plan long before you ever did.
God has a purpose for this world, and He invites you to be part of it.
“It’s not about you.”
Perhaps, the number one question for us to ask isn’t ‘What is my purpose?’ but rather, ‘What is God doing in His world?’"
Align with that, and you’ll find what matters most.
What’s Your T.H.I.N.G?
At our core, we’re all called to love God and love others. That’s the foundation, the non-negotiable, the thing that gives life its real meaning. But here’s where it gets personal—how we live that out will look different for each of us.
Here’s how to help any young person unlock their purpose by asking five simple questions.
T is for Talents: What are my God-given talents? Your talents aren’t random. They’re clues to your purpose.
H is for Hopes: What do I hope and dream for? Your dreams reveal what God has placed in your heart.
I is for Influences: Who or what influences me most? Who you listen to shapes who you become.
N is for Negatives: What challenges do I need to overcome? Your struggles don’t disqualify you. They prepare you.
G is for Growth: How do I grow in my purpose? Purpose isn’t a destination—it’s a process.
Work through these questions with any young person and it can feel like you are uncapping a superpower!
My new book What You Are Made For reminds young people that purpose isn’t something you sit around waiting for—it’s something you step into.
Your Talents aren’t random—they’re given to be used.
Your Hopes matter—God plants dreams for a reason.
Your Influences shape you—choose wisely.
Your Negatives don’t define you—they strengthen you.
Your Growth is ongoing—keep moving forward.
Finding your T.H.I.N.G isn’t about making your own plans and asking God to bless them. It’s about getting on board with what God is already doing.
So, what’s your T.H.I.N.G? And more importantly—how will you use it to love God and love others?
